Success Story: Homeward Bound of Marin

Homeward Bound of Marin County's Fresh Starts Culinary Academy welcomes students for 18 weeks of intensive training to prepare for jobs in the culinary industry. Through gaining hands-on experience, students develop skills and knowledge in food preperation and safety, recipe sizing, kitchen organization, and foodservice.

 

Trainee Population: Homeless youth & adults

Social Enterprises: Café, catering, shelter meals, food manufacturing

Problem:  Existing program structure was limiting their impact in the community.

Solution:  Re-launched program, implemented staggered admissions and year round training.

Services Provided:  Site visit, program design, organizational development, curriculum materials, peer exchange.

Outcomes:

Increased number of trainees served per year from 40 to 70

Increased job placement from 30 to 50

Reduced training costs by 50%

Advanced staff development

Progressed to Model Membership

Gained ACF Certification
